He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1977 to 1979. Deshmukh died on 27 February 2010 in the premises of Chitrakoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya, which was established by him. He was also the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.

Bhupen Hazarika

Composer, playback singer, music director, lyricist, musician, folk artist, poet and filmmaker from Assam, widely known as Sudhakantha has adorned many hats.

He introduced the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema at the national level. He received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1975. He has also received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Padmashri (1977), and Padmabhushan (2001), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), which is the highest award of India for cinema.

Pranab Mukherjee

2019 Bharat Ratna Award Winners

Pranab Mukerhjee is the only 2019 Bharat Ratna awardees to get this honor during his lifetime. He served as the 13th President of India (25 July 2012 – 25 July 2017). Prior to holding the highest position in country, he has been a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and has handled multiple ministerial portfolios in the Government of India.

Mukerhjee was born in a Bengali family in Mirati, a village in the Bengal Presidency of British India (now in Birbhum district, West Bengal. He attended the Suri Vidyasagar College in Suri (Birbhum), then affiliated to University of Calcutta.

Mukerhjee has been a five-time member of Rajya Sabha (the upper house of Indian parliament) starting in 1969,1975, 1981, 1993 and 1999.
